Welcome to reading at Meadow Park School.

At Meadow Park School we are committed to supporting every child to become fluent, inquisitive readers and to growing a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. As well as this, good reading skills help young people to cope confidently with the demands of further education, employment and adult life.

Aims of the reading policy

  • To prioritise reading skills, including disciplinary reading, to enable students to read, understand and access examination materials, so that they are able to achieve their educational potential across the curriculum.
  • To ensure that students who need additional help with their reading have support to improve those skills.
  • To provide targeted vocabulary instruction in every subject.
  • To develop students’ ability to read complex texts to open up pathways to success and active participation in the society and culture.

Reading for pleasure plays a vital role in personal development and well-being:

Engaging with stories enhances brain function, improving vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Reading can also provide an escape from everyday stress, allowing readers to relax and recharge. It can also evoke emotions and empathy through characters’ experience – fiction, in particular, stimulates the imagination, encouraging creative thinking and innovation and reading different genres introduces readers to diverse cultures, perspectives, and ideas, broadening their understanding of the world.

Sharing books can foster conversations and connections with others, building relationships through shared interests.

Reading for pleasure keeps the mind engaged and can cultivate a habit of lifelong learning, promoting curiosity and exploration.

Our school library has 1000s of books which students can borrow so that they are never without something to read!
