Curriculum Overview
PE and Sport
The Physical Education department at Meadow Park School is characterised by a strong team of practitioners with a wide range of experience and expertise. This, combined with high-quality facilities, enables the department to deliver a consistently ambitious curriculum that promotes high standards and supports all students to succeed.
Intent
The PE curriculum is designed to be broad, inclusive, and ambitious, ensuring that all students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to participate successfully in a range of physical activities.
It aims to instil a lifelong appreciation for physical activity by promoting healthy, active lifestyles and enabling students to make informed choices about their wellbeing. The curriculum also provides opportunities for students to develop leadership, officiating, and coaching skills, particularly at Key Stage 4, preparing them for continued participation in sport beyond school.
Implementation
• At Key Stage 3, students follow a carefully sequenced, skill-based curriculum across a wide range of activities, enabling them to develop competence, confidence, and resilience.
• Schemes of learning are structured to build progressively on prior knowledge, with opportunities for students to apply skills in competitive and cooperative contexts.
• Curriculum overviews are shared with students to ensure clarity of progression and to support their understanding of how learning develops over time.
• At Key Stage 4, the curriculum builds on these foundations, with a greater emphasis on tactical awareness, decision-making, and leadership within sport.
• In Year 11, students follow one of three pathways—Participation, Performance, or Healthy Lifestyles—allowing for a more personalised curriculum that reflects individual interests and aspirations.
• Students also have the opportunity to undertake the BTEC Level 2 in Sport, providing a vocational pathway that supports further study or careers in sport and related fields.
Impact
The impact of the curriculum is measured through a range of qualitative and quantitative indicators:
• Strong uptake and continued progression in BTEC Sport at Levels 2 and 3
• High levels of student engagement in lessons and participation in extra-curricular provision
• Positive student voice, reflecting enjoyment, confidence, and understanding
• Increasing levels of participation in physical activity beyond the school setting
Outcomes at Key Stage 4 demonstrate positive progress and attainment. In 2020, students achieved outcomes that were +0.14 grades above the national average when compared to peers with similar starting points, reflecting the effectiveness of the curriculum and its implementation.
