PE and Sport

We have a large team within the PE department, with varying degrees of experience and lots of responsibilities elsewhere at school. Alongside the team, our outstanding facilities allow us to drive standards in PE allowing students to thrive.

Intent

The intent of Physical Education at Meadow Park School is to provide students with a wide base of skills and knowledge to help them become successful learners in a range of sports.

The curriculum aims to inspire pupils to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by equipping them with the confidence and knowledge they need to make informed decisions regarding their physical activity levels.

It will also develop students’ understanding of further roles within the sport such as officiating, leading, and coaching through our KS4 pathways.

Implementation

• Pupils are taught a skill-based curriculum in year 7, 8 and 9 across a variety of sports.
• Each scheme of learning is designed to allow pupils to learn new skills and apply them in a game-based scenario.
• All schemes of learning overviews are shared with pupils so they can see how their learning develops across the key stage and what they will be doing in future lessons.
• In year 10 pupils focus on tactical awareness, officiating and leading sports activities.
• In year 11 pupils follow three pathways: Participation, Performance and Healthy Lifestyles. Pupils are encouraged to opt for their chosen pathway with consideration for future sporting participation.
• In KS4 pupils have the option to study assessed BTEC Sport Level 2.

Impact

The impact of the curriculum is measured in a wide variety of ways that include:

1. Uptake of BTEC Sport at Level 2 and Level 3.
2. Student engagement with lesson activities and extra-curricular clubs.
3. Student feedback questionnaires on understanding and engagement.
4. Analysis of student participation in sport outside of school.

Results at Level 2 are analysed by progress and attainment. The attainment in 2020 put us performing at +0.14 per grade better than the national average when compared to pupils with the same starting point.
